DJ Global Wave Inc. to partner with Water Polo Quebec

Worldwide, October 6, 2014 - The sports management company DJ Global Wave officially announces its partnership with Water Polo Quebec (FWPQ) in order to jointly organize the first Haba Waba North America Festival to take place in Montreal on July 9-12, 2015. The Haba Waba festival is currently a highly successful yearly event held in Italy that combines sport, family fun and education.

The event in Montreal will be the first time the festival is held outside of Europe, but will follow the same basic goals and objectives: to create a mini Olympics-style experience for 12 U & 10U categories made up of boys, girls & co-ed teams and characterized by a fun, festive atmosphere and various forms of entertainment.

“We are happy and honored to have a partner like Water Polo Quebec, who has recognized the value of the Haba Waba Festival project and the importance of bringing the event to Montreal, Canada, and North America as a whole. The importance of developing and increasing a base of young athletes and engaging them in sport is huge, and we are hoping that other cities and entities in North American will recognize this soon as well“, says Global Wave President Dragan Jovanovic.

The Haba Waba International festival is currently the most visible and important water polo event for children ages 6-11 and this year attracted around 1,380 young athletes hailing from five continents. DJ Global Wave hopes to eventually achieve similar success with its festival in North America. Says DJ Global Wave partner & 4x Olympian Tony Azevedo, “for our first Montreal event, we are aiming to bring in around 40 teams from all over Canada and the US. And this is only the beginning— we really believe the excitement about the festival will spread to other parts of our continent and work to strengthen our sport in this hemisphere.”

Regional league: Good start for Red Star, Primorje dominates Mladost

The Regional league is gearing up with the second round matches in which Serbian teams had success recording victories in their respective matches. Partizan Reifaissen  was in action on Tuesday with strong performance against Slovenian representative AVK Branik 20-6, while on Wednesday Radnicki Kon Tiki proved too strong on their home field against POŠK 13-6, and Vojvodina earned 3 points beating Medvescak in Novi Sad 6-2. In the last match of the round Red Star used a good last quarter performance to turn things around and beat Mornar Brodospas 9-7. An interesting match-up and the first of two televised game was in Rijeka were Primorije EB played against HAVK Mladost, and local fans had a lot to cheerfor  with the home team giving a convincing performance with an 8-2 victory as Sundro Sukno led the way with four goals. The other big favourite of the competition and Group B leaders Jug Dubrovnik used a good team effort to win against the almost neighbours of Jadran Herceg Novi ,14-10, with veteran Nikola Janovic scoring 3 times, and nine players getting on to scoresheet. Boris Zlokovic was three time on target for Jadran, but that was not enough for the two-time Adriatic league champion. Meanwhile in Group A Budva turned things around in last quarter visiting Jadran Split and taking the victory away 8-9 for their first points of the season. Their big signing centre-forward Nikola Murisic was the main force in attack for Montenigrins scoring 3 goals.

Red Star vs. Mornar

Serbian champions Red Star were off to a good start of their campaign in Regional league after victory in Belgrade against Mornar Brodospas 9-7 (2-1, 2-2, 1-3, 4-1). Skipping first round due to the VK Opatija withdrawal from the league, the team from Belgrade welcomed Mornar in front of a solid crowd of over 500 visitors at the Vlaho Orlic pool. As expected the brothers Rasovic, Strahinja and Viktor, took the main roles in a new looking Red Star squad after the leaving of big names during the summer. Still, coach Dejan Savic side manage to keep good rhythm in defence, thanks to agile and versatile players on the back with Serbian national player Sava Randjelovic and newcomers Dimitrije Obradovic and Radomir Drasovic.  Strahinja Rasovic opened the score from an extra player situation but the visitors from Split responded quickly trough Jerko Marinic Kragic who was on form netting three during first half.

Mornar stayed close on half time (4-3), and after a somewhat longer brake due to technical difficulties with the scoreboard the team from Split finally managed to convert the extra man opportunities earned trough Jure Marelja’s strong play on the two meters line. Ivan Domagoj Zovic, Rino Buric and Maroje Gluhaic were on target to give their team first lead of the game 5-6 at the end of thid quarter. The home team came into the last quarter with a goal short but with fierce back-up of the home crowd Viktor Rasovic managed to level things at the beginning of the last period, before the vistors’ captain Marin Ban brought back the lead to his team.

In a tight finish the Mornar missed a couple extra man chances and Strahinja Rasovic took the leading role scoring from distance for the 7 all score. The game could go either way from there but the home team had more focus and managed to outplay their rivals with a good team effort with Nikola Eskert scoring an important goal with just over a minute to play for the lead: 8-7. Mornar tried to respond quickly, but fell short as Strahinja Rasovic scored his 5th of the game on a counter attack to seal the win.

The new round is to be played in seven days. Red Star is visiting Jadran in Herceg Novi while after two defeats to start Mornar will have a chance for victory when Primorac Kotor comes to the Poljud Pool in Split.

Stasera c’è Roma Vis Nova-Como

A1 maschile – Seconda giornata

Michele e Stefano Luongo
A1 femminile – Seconda giornata – Ore 15,00
Giulia Fabbri

Water Polo: 2015 the year of change?

Water polo looks to be close to what might turn out to be a drastic change. In an attempt to increase the tempo and overall attractiveness of the sport on a global scale high placed water polo delegates for the past years have been thinking on rule changes that could help reaching that objective. Now a desired more up-tempo game looks to be forced as FINA informed its federations on Tuesday regarding new rules which were approved by the FINA Bureau, by mail vote, following a proposal of the Technical Water Polo Committee, and will be applied already starting in 2015. Or in fact in 2014 as the men's World League will see the first of changes, competition being played on a 25x20 meter pitch instead of the former 30x20 size, being applied in November when the first round of the preliminary phase in Europe is set to be played around the continent.

Following the reduction of the size of the pool in men's international competition even more changes will be implemented at the men's and women's World Junior (age 20 & under) Championships to be played in Almaty, Kazakhstan (men) and Guadalajara, Mexico (women). Here also the teams will be reduced from thirteen to eleven players with corresponding reduction of players in the water from seven to six, of course one of whom shall be the goalkeeper. In addition a women's sized (4) ball will be used also in men's competition in Almaty as well as the 2016 World Youth (age 18 & under) Championships were the same rules will be applied as well. The smaller teams open up a possibility for the number of women's teams at an Olympic Games tournament being as high as the men's teams: 12. Now it still is 8. FINA for years is lobbying to get the number of teams in the women's and men's tournament levelled at 12 and reducing the teams will mean less athletes around during the Olympics for water polo which instead could be filled with women athletes raising the number of their teams. So overall the same number of athletes, only divided different with a levelled men's and women's tournament in terms of participating teams.

The in-game changes will not be a complete shocker to most of the senior internationals around the world. In anticipation of their proposal, FINA's Technical Water Polo Committee urged some test tournament to be held last season ahead of the World League Super Final where senior men's teams could practice playing under the new circumstances. The national teams from Serbia, Russia and Australia did so in Belgrade while China and Montenegro extended their stay in Dubai for some test games after the Super Final tournament last June.

Different sounds arise from the water polo world when talking about the new rules. The majority of powerhouse-nations is firmly against the implementation of changes which in repeated answers, will not solve the problems that the sport might occur and instead only changes the soul of a complete sport. With current Brazil head coach, four-time Olympic gold medal winning coach Ratko Rudic, being one of the well-known figures around the water polo world who is not a fan of the changes and firmly reacted in the press when asked about the topic, up until recently when he finished his native Croatia for a training camp with his new national team, in preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games. On the contrary people are looking for a more up-tempo and less physical game, more easy to watch with less interuptions by the sound of a whistle from the referee awarding a free throw or man-up possession. More goals and less fouls basically.

So far it looks as if the 2016 Olympics will be played with the current applying rules while its first qualification occasion for the men, this year's World League, is being contested in a different circumstance. Although that difference might sound strange, it is not yet sure. The FINA Bureau is set to meet during an extraordinary congress on the occasion of the annual FINA Convention, this year held in Doha from 29 November to 2 December. And it is there that a decision on the possible changing of the rules for all competition is expected to be taken. The question will be what changes are to be decided in favour of by the Bureau. And with what starting date. After their meeting during the Convention, it is likely all players, managers, fans and others involved will know more on the face of water polo for the years to come.
