The U17 European Junior Championships this year will be incorporated in the 1st European Games, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan and over the weekend both the boys and girls were busy making sure to get to the top 2 in their respective groups to earn a berth at the prestigious event. In the boys group A, played in the Netherlands, the hosts lost a dramatic head-to-head duel for the 2nd and final qualification spot behind Greece to Ukraine 10-11 as they joined the favourite Greek en route to Baku. In group B both Slovakia and Turkey deservedly took the first two spots and the same went in group C where France and Romania earned their berths. In group D hosts Malta secured an historic qualification finishing 2nd behind a dominant German side as they topped Great Britain 6-7 in a head-to-head duel for 2nd place. In the women's tournament 2 close finishes were to be seen. In group A Great Britain and Czech Republic drew level 8-8 and finished with equal points but the Brits' better goal scoring difference got them 2nd place behind France and thus qualification to the European Games. In group C, played in Belgrade, Serbia held off Croatia in their direct battle on Sunday drawing level 5-5 which meant 1-point advantage for Serbia over Croatia in the standings behind unbeaten Germany. In group B meanwhile, both Slovakia and Israel decided things quickly to gain the top 2 spots and ensure qualification.

Considering the final classification of the Men’s European Junior Championship of Malta 2013 and the ranking of the Women’s European Junior Championship of Istanbul 2013, the teams directly qualified to the Euro Games are respectively the 1st to 7th placed teams at the Men’s Junior Champs 2013 (Montenegro, Serbia, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Russia, Spain plus Azerbaijan as organiser), and the 1st to 6th placed teams at the Women’s Junior Champs 2013 (Greece, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Russia).
